The Iron Horse Trail Overcrossings Project has completed phase one and is now moving into phase two. The project, spearheaded to provide improved access and safety along the Iron Horse Trail, is a collaborative effort between Contra County, Danville, San Ramon, and the East Bay Regional Park District. Phase one was the Corridor Concept Plan, which evaluated the feasibility and costs of building overcrossings along the Iron Horse Trail for cyclists and pedestrians to use instead of the current roadways. The idea is to provide not only a safer way to use the trail, but also to help reduce traffic issues along the areas affected.
Phase two has now begun, and the first part is to give the community a chance to be heard with a survey. You can weigh in your opinion on the proposed crossings at Bollinger Canyon Road and Crow Canyon Road in San Ramon. The survey is open now through November 26th. There will be other forms of public outreach into early 2015 regarding the impact and designs of the overcrossings. Once Phase two is completed, phase three will begin, which covers the environmental approval and final design. Phase four, the final phase, will be the actual construction of the Iron Horse Trail overcrossings and will begin after environmental approval is gained, pending how much grant money is garnered.
The Iron Horse Trail is a multi-use trail running between Concord and Pleasanton, spanning a total of 32 miles. It runs along the former Southern Pacific Railroad right of way which was built in 1891. The trail as a whole represents the cumulative efforts of several agencies and communities working together to provide an important recreational and commute access point for all the areas along the trail. The trail connects residential and commercial areas, schools, parks, and public transportation, as well as other trails in our region.
