We all know there has been an ongoing drought for some time now. There are things home owners can do to help conserve water when it comes to caring for your yard. The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has ways to help encourage water conservation. These programs will help you save some money in the long run-always a bonus. The EBMUD has two key programs in place to promote water conservation in our yards and gardens, WaterSmart plant tags and landscape conversion rebates.
Working with area nurseries such as Tassajara Nursery in Danville, Mt. Diablo Nursery and Orchard Nursery & Florist in Lafayette, and Annie’s Annuals in Richmond, the EBMUD is providing special WaterSmart plant tags to help consumers choose plants that are more water efficient and grow well in drier climates. The tags offer information through a scan code, which you can use to learn about water–wise plants and water saving tips. The tags are easily identified with the message, “I’m a WaterSmart plant” on them. By choosing plants such as Rosemary, French Lavender, or California Sagebrush, you can turn your yard into an oasis of natural beauty, which is better able to use and conserve water. The EBMUD also has a wonderful book providing vital information on WaterSmart Plants.
Rebates are also available to promote water conservation. With the “Get Cash for Grass” program, you can get a rebate of $0.50 per square foot of lawn removal. If you install a new drip irrigation system, you can get $0.25 per square foot back. You can also get a rebate of $75 to $300 for installing a smart, self-regulating irrigation control system. There are a total of 6 water saving rebates available, you need only provide information and submit an application for approval of the rebate. Residential locations can get up to $2,500 back in rebates, and you will lower your water bill as well. All the information you need is provided in the Lawn Conversion & Irrigation Rebates section of the EBMUD website.
